Photo note: These family pictures were made possible because of four key items: a tripod (to mount the tripod, lens, and flash), a camera with a port for a cable to allow remote triggering, and two Pocket Wizard Plus II radio transceivers (one connected to the camera via the cable and one held in dad's hand to trigger the camera). In each of these family picture situations, 20 to 30 images were taken to ensure several good pictures, and SiowFong selected the best one for Lydia's blog.

Lydia is examining the interesting flower shape of tulips.

At Roozengarde, a display garden, one can find a variety of tulips with respect to their primary color(s). In nearby fields, the tulip blooms had not yet opened, but at Roozengarde, the tulips were in full bloom.

Lydia is employing sign language to communicate that she just heard or saw an airplane. When she does this, she usually opens the palm of her left hand and then she quickly moves the palm of her right hand across the palm of her left hand to signify that event to us.

The annual daffodil and tulip festival in La Conner, Washington draws hordes of visitors to this part of the state each April, particularly on weekends, as the yearly celebration spans the entire month.

Because of the large weekend crowds, SiowFong took half a day off from work so that we could see the fields on a weekday when the number of visitors is much lower.

Lydia, who was wearing her yellow boots, is standing in between two rows of daffodils.

The daffodils always bloom before the tulips bloom. In past years, by the time we went to see the tulips near the peak of their blooms, most of the daffodils were harvested already, and the blossoms on the remaining daffodils were dying. This was the first year in which we saw the daffodils at the height of their bloom.

I Want to See Auntie MayLee

April 14, 2008

“I Want to See Auntie MayLee”

Lydia’s viewing preferences have shifted. Previously she watched some children’s programming in the morning on the local public television station when she drank her milk. In the evenings, she would often ask to watch one of the Let Your Music Shine videos at dinner and / or before bedtime. After our trip to the Big Island of Hawaii, Lydia clamored to see those videos on a daily basis for weeks after we returned home. Now her interests after changed. After SiowFong informed Lydia that “pour pour” (Lydia’s maternal grandmother, Ma Wee) and auntie MayLee would be coming to visit later this year, SiowFong wanted to show Lydia their images on the home videos of our trip to Malaysia last June. Since seeing those videos, Lydia consistently requests, “I want to see auntie Maylee.” Although we are happy that Lydia is excited to see Ma Wee and auntie MayLee, we are somewhat concerned that Lydia’s video viewing has increased to 2 to 3 hours per day, thus sometimes exceeding the 2 hours per day, which is the maximum amount recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
