Fear of the Dark

May 13, 2007

Fear of the Dark

Children just know some things even though they may not have been formally taught those things. One common example is the fear of the dark. Lydia, for instance, used to walk into her darkened bedroom in the evening without hesitation, but recently, SiowFong has noticed that at night, Lydia pauses before entering that very familiar room that she shares with Ma Wee.

Another example of her fear of the dark occurred just a few minutes ago. Lydia was eagerly pushing the big red-orange exercise ball around in the library and laundry area of our home where the lights were activated. While she was playing with the ball, she pushed it into the unlit guest bedroom, and she would not walk into that darkened room to retrieve the ball. Only when SiowFong and I asked Lydia to get it and only after SiowFong reassured Lydia that she would be watching her did Lydia go into the guest bedroom for the ball.

Mother's Day

May 13, 2007

Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day is a day of firsts at our home. For SiowFong, it commemorates her first Mother’s Day. When I wished her a Happy Mother’s Day after she awoke this morning, SiowFong beamed. For Ma Wee, it is her fifty-ninth Mother’s Day as her eldest, Maynah, is fifty-nine years old, but for Ma Wee, it is her first Mother’s Day ever celebrated outside Malaysia.

At church today, the ushers gave chocolates to all the women of the congregation during the first part of the service, and then the ushers handed out notepads with pens at the conclusion of the service to the ladies.

During the afternoon, Bernard, Ma Wee’s third son, called to wish her a Happy Mother’s Day, and MayLee, Ma Wee’s second daughter, did the same this evening.

Paternal Grandparents Homebound

Paternal Grandparents Homebound

Seventeen days have passed so quickly. SiowFong picked up Pa and Ma Chin from the airport on Thursday, April 26, 2007, and at 8:45 PM tonight, we took them back to the airport. Pa and Ma Chin said goodbye to Lydia, kissed her, and walked down the stairs followed by SiowFong and me, leaving Lydia and Ma Wee at home.

While we were gone, Lydia remained within a foot or two of Ma Wee in the living room until her bedtime at 10:00 PM. For example, Ma Wee reported to us that Lydia did not even venture a few yards away to retrieve her ball with which she was playing after the ball rolled away from her.
